This list of the top 10 best water filter jugs exists to save you time on your research and to also to make sure you don’t waste your money on some useless product that will fall to pieces straight out of the box, saving you the frustration of having to buy another.
In my area (Wakefield), the water tastes like a mouth full of swimming pool water I consume after a belly flop off the top diving board, in my personal opinion that is…
Many people will disagree with me on that as we are supposed to have some of the best water in the UK, according to this tappwater survey of 500 people which ranked Yorkshire 3rd.
It may just be my sensitive taste buds or something as water filtered through a jug goes down the neck like silk compared to box standard tap water, it’s like night and day difference to me.
Not only can I notice the chlorine after taste when drinking the water directly from the tap without filtering, I can also taste it in the food I cook with it such as pasta or rice, which is why I now filter any water I use from the tap though a jug before it enters my gob.
This is WITHOUT even thinking about what is lurking in the pipes as it travels from the water treatment plant to my house, who knows what it picks up along the way before it hits my gut that can barely handle a chicken korma?
If you feel the same as me and you don’t want to spend a fortune buying bottled water from the supermarket, then you need to invest a small amount of money in a decent water filter jug, it will be one of the best decisions you make and will give you piece of mind.
BRITA Marella Water Filter Jug
The BRITA Marella is by far one of the best water filter jugs available on the market right now and for very good reason, it’s gets the job done very well, the design of the product is pleasing to the eye, buyers love it and it doesn’t cost a fortune either.
This water filter jug is available in 3 different colors, graphite (pictured above), blue and white. With a slimline design you can fit it in most fridge doors unless you have one of them fridges that are so small you have to keep your beers cold in the back garden, like I used to.
Unlike the BRITA Aluna where you have to take off the entire lid to refill it, the BRITA Marella has a flip top lid to improve the convenience of refilling which will be quite regular, especially if you have a couple of kids using it like me and with the exception of the lid, is dishwasher safe.
It has a total capacity of 2.4 litres with a filtered water capacity of 1.4 litres as with almost all water filter jugs, the filter section itself takes up most of the space inside the jug.
The most important feature of the BRITA Marella is the Maxtra+ water filter that now has 25% finer mesh to further reduce the amount of coarse particles found in tap water and lasts 1 month. You are given a 3 month supply of Maxtra+ filters and are affordable to replace.
Micro carbon pearls within the Maxtra+ water filter help to reduce organic impurities and chlorine which affect the odour and taste of food and water. To enhance the flavor of tea and coffee, along with protecting your kettle, the Ion exchange pearls reduce metals and limescale.
To make sure you don’t forget when the filter needs to be replaced, there is an electronic memo reminder on the top of the lid, although this is in no way connected electronically to the filter itself, it’s simply a 1 month timer that can be reset when replacing the filter.
In conclusion, the BRITA Marella in my opinion is the best it gets at this price point. Your drinking water and food will taste better, be healthier for you and your family and it works out at just a few pence per litre, so you save a fortune compared to buying bottled water.

BRITA Aluna Water Filter Jug
The BRITA Aluna water filter jug comes in 2 colors (white and blue) and has 2 sizes, the first is similar to the Marella featured above which has a total filtered water capacity of 1.4 litres, suitable for smaller families.
The BRITA Aluna XL has a large counter top design and is more suitable for larger families. It has a total filtered water capacity of 2.4 litres, so if you drink water like a fish, this jug is ideal.
It’s safe to say that this one will not fit in your fridge door, unless your fridge is like a walk in wardrobe or one of them gigantic American style fridges that have built in barn doors. You will need to make space for this within the main compartment of your fridge, so keep that in mind.
The only real difference between the Aluna and the Marella water filter jugs is the price and the lid, with the Aluna costing around half the price although when refilling the Aluna you will have to wrestle with the entire lid to fill it up (can be difficult), where as the Marella has a more convenient flip top lid for refilling.
In conclusion, the standard BRITA Aluna is not bad for the price if you don’t mind standing on the lid to get it off every time you want to refill the thing, which can be frustrating. You will need a gigantic fridge for the XL version, so think about the space you have available.

BRITA Elemaris Water Filter Jug
The BRITA Elemaris cool water filter jug is similar to the ones already featured above as they all use the same Maxtra+ filters and have similar color and size options, although has a couple of additional features not found in the ones above, as well as been more visually appealing.
Where as the Aluna has a lid that requires a crowbar to open and the Marella has a more convenient flip top lid, the Elemaris has a pour through lid which I think should be a feature on the Marella (hint hint BRITA).
The Elemaris also has a built in Meter technology which takes into account the hardness of your water, the volume of water going through it and the time that has passed to more accurately measure the recommended time to replace the filter cartridge, which in my opinion is an awesome feature not found in models above, but should be.
The only issues with this product and the reason why it’s not ranked higher is the fact that the meter technology may recommend you change your filter cartridges much more often depending on your water hardness and also when refilling, you may drown yourself with back splash if you open the tap at full blast.
If BRITA can resolve the above issues by making sure that the filters last at least 30 days, even if your water is as hard as Bruce Lee and integrate some type of anti back splash feature, then all BRITA water filter jugs will become much more convenient and cost effective in the future.
In conclusion, the standard BRITA Aluna Elemaris is a great product overall, although if you want to avoid getting wet and spending more on filter cartridge replacements due to the recommendations from the built-in meter technology, then buy something else.

Aqua Optima Oria Water Filter Jug
The Aqua Optima Oria Water Filter Jug featured is available in white and has a total filtered water capacity of 1.4 litres. With it’s slimline design and removable handle it will fit in most fridge doors very easily.
You are provided with a 12 month supply of filters (6 filters that last up to 60 days each), which means these filters last twice as long as BRITA filters and both the Evolve and Original filters fit all Aqua Optima jugs *not antibac, whilst the Evolve filters are compatible with most leading brands.
The 5 step fast flow filtration system technology is a superior water filter that helps to reduce chlorine, limescale, herbicides, pesticides, lead and heavy metals as filtered water tastes much better in a glass or when cooking food & also helps to improve your health and wellbeing.
What I like about Aqua Optima most of all is their commitment to recycling. All Aqua Optima filters are 100% recyclable in the UK and Eire through their free programme with TerraCycle, so you can send the filters back to Aqua Optima to be re-used at no cost to you.
In conclusion, the Aqua Optima Oria is great for the environment as not only do you reduce the amount of plastic you use if buying bottled water, but you can also recycle your used water filters for free with TerraCycle. The build quality however, has a long way to go.

ZeroWater ZP-010 Water Filter Jug
The ZeroWater ZP-010 Water Filter Jug comes in a selection of colors (blue, white, clear) and 4 different sizes (7, 10, 12 and 23 cups). Although you will struggle to find most of them in stock from my opinion, so your options are quite limited but at the time of writing this, the blue 10 cup option was available.
This particular product claims to reduce TDS (Totally Dissolved Solids) down to ZERO and we have confirmed that many customers who have purchased this product have found the same results, as when you buy this, it comes with a free TDS meter so you can test yourself.
According to ZeroWater, their water filter jugs reduces the TDS by 99%, compared to 50% reduction from other leading brands such as BRITA, although we have yet to personally test this claim in order to verify claimed results.
The 5 stages of filtration can reduce chemicals, metals, salts, minerals and run-off to provide a better tasting and more pure water. This is achieved by not only having carbon filtration but also Ion exchange technology, similar to that of BRITA’s Maxtra+ filters.
One of the massive issues with this product is the fact that when the filter expires, it changes the acidity of the water and starts to smell like fish, as there is no other indicators on the product to remind you when to change the filter.
They even mention on their sales page that the “fishy smell” is a crafty feature of the product, so I’m guessing their product development department have no clue about marketing and customer experience. My gosh, I would be embarrassed if my product did this. SORT IT OUT!
In conclusion, the ZeroWater ZP-010 Water Filter Jug does a great job at reducing TDS (Totally Dissolved Solids) at a higher rate, compared to other leading brands. Although the build quality is nowhere near as good as BRITA products, but if you like the smell of fish?

AmazonBasics Water Filter Jug
The AmazonBasics Water Filter Jug is available in black or white, has a filtered water capacity of 1.4 litres and has proven to deliver better tasting water, considering the price of this unit compared to it’s rivals, which is one of the most affordable to buy and to maintain.
As this product is designed to fit in fridge doors, you should have no issues fitting it in yours. The handle has an ergonomic design for comfortable handling, the lid has a thumb activate flip lid for convenient refilling and is dishwasher-safe up to 50° C with the lid removed.
This product is especially good for hard water by helping to reduce limescale, chlorine and other water impurities. The filtration is achieved using activated carbon made from coconut shells, although small carbon dust may flush out into the water you filter, but is not harmful.
Regarding the filters, they are cheap to replace and it’s recommended you change them every 30 days, similar to other leading brands. The electronic filter-replacement indicator signals when cartridge needs to be changed and are also compatible with BRITA Maxtra water filters.
One customer claimed that after moving from Scotland to London, the drinking water made them gag (bad taste and cloudy), but after using the AmazonBasics Water Filter Jug, the tap water is now clear and tastes great.
In conclusion, the AmazonBasics Water Filter Jug is worth every single penny, it has a better build quality than other leading brands at twice the price, customers love it and it simply gets the job done. It’s one of the most affordable to buy and to maintain.

Aqua Optima Liscia Water Filter Jug
The Aqua Optima Liscia Water Filter Jug is one of the most affordable products on this list, although the total filtered water capacity is smaller at 1.2 litres, compared to the Aqua Optima Oria at 1.4 litres.
Filter cartridges also last half as long at 30 days, compared to the Aqua Optima Oria at 60 days, although you still get the same 5 step Evolve filtration system that will significantly reduce water impurities such as herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, chlorine and limescale.
I don’t believe I mentioned this above on the Oria, but will Aqua Optima water filter jugs you also get a filter replacement app to remind you when you need to change the filter, which can be downloaded on both Android and iPhone.
As with all Aqua Optima products, your used filters are 100% recyclable in the UK and Eire with their free Terracycle programme, so by purchasing this product, you again reduce your use of plastic as you don’t need to buy bottled water and can send your used filters back for free.
In conclusion, the Aqua Optima Liscia Water Filter Jug is good for the environment, reducing your plastic use and allowing you to send your used filters back for free so they can also be recycled.
Unfortunately, same as the Oria, many customers complain about the build quality such as filters that don’t fit and leaking issues, so make sure the company has addressed these issues before you buy as you may just end up sending it back and buying something else.

BRITA Fun Water Filter Jug
The BRITA Fun Water Filter Jug is a funky looking product for those looking for something with more colour and style. It comes in 4 colours (lime, blue, pink and purple) and has a complete filtered water capacity of 1.1 litres.
Although not ideal for the daily hydration needs of a large family, it’s more ideal for refreshments at the table when having your tea or for small kitchens/fridges due to it’s compact design, as it would pretty much fit into any fridge size.
As with all the other BRITA water filter jugs we have already featured on this page, the BRITA Fun also comes with the MAXTRA+ water filter with MicroPore technology that lasts around 30 days, with an electronic timer in the lid to remind you when it needs to be replaced.
The Maxtra+ water filter has been specifically designed to reduce all impurities for cleaner, better tasting water that can also be used to cook food for better flavor and in the kettle to reduce limescale buildup, improving the lifespan of your appliance.
In conclusion, the BRITA Fun Water Filter Jug is a really funky looking product with a better choice of colours to choose from for those that want more choice.
Although this has a smaller filtered water capacity, it’s ideal for households with less space in the kitchen, have a smaller fridge or just want something smaller for the dining table.

OXA Smart Alkaline Water Filter Jug
The OXA Smart Alkaline Water Filter Jug come in 2 colours (white and blue), has a total filtered water capacity of 2.5 litres and comes with 2 long life water filters that can each filter up to 300 litres of water, which equates to around 1200 cups of water.
What is unique about this product compared to the ones we have already featured is the fact that the filter itself increases pH by 2 or more points offering pH 8.5-10.0 to help support systemic pH balance in the body.
The filter also provides low negative ORP:-100mv (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) which transforms ordinary water into rich antioxidant water to help energize and revitalize your body. So if you suffer with bad guts, this is definitely worth a try.
If that wasn’t enough, the 7 layer water filter made of ion exchange resin, tourmaline, mineral balls and activated carbon will help filter out chlorine, limescale and other contaminants along with permanently absorbing metals including lead and copper.
In conclusion, the OXA Smart Alkaline Water Filter Jug is a great concept and attempt at improving water beyond what other leading brands have accomplished.
Increasing the pH and producing water with a low negative ORP is awesome, although there has been complaints about faulty filters and 1 person said the water tasted like fish.

Phox Alkaline Water Filter Jug
The Phox Alkaline Water Filter Jug is a black and clear jug with a capacity of 3.5 litres that filters out common water impurities with the help of natural coconut shell carbon, infusing the water with essential minerals and anti-oxidant properties. It’s like water filtration with super powers.
Phox, the company that develops this product is clearly big on the environment, sustainability and the health of people who trust their products. Not only will you save 350 plastic bottles per filter, you will also save 28Kg of carbon emissions compared to buying bottled water.
It’s the 5 stage water filtration process where all the magic happens and similar to the water filter jugs I have already mentioned above, this one will also reduce chlorine, heavy metals, contaminants and odour.
Besides removing all the nasty stuff that can be found in standard tap water, this filter will also add in some goodness too including essential minerals and electrolytes, giving your tap water a pH level between 8 to 9.5 which is far better for the body.
Alkaline water helps to re-energise you and keep your body balanced. Re-structured alkaline water helps to neutralise the increase in lactic acid in your muscles, as well as keep you deeply hydrated before, during and after your workout.
In conclusion, the Phox Alkaline Water Filter Jug looks great and I like the focus on health & environment (how many bottles of plastic and carbon emissions you can avoid) but when all is said an done, it’s about how the product performs.
While there is many customers raving about this, there has been a ton of problems from customers mainly from faulty water filters or water filters that stop working after just a couple of uses, so they have to improve this moving forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tap water in the UK is some of the best in the world, but this does not mean we are not vulnerable to risks from contamination of some kind.
From acidic water corroding copper pipes to aging infrastructure, there is a real level of risk for you and your family when consuming tap water in areas known for poor water quality.
An affordable water filter jug not only gives you piece of mind, but the water tastes much better when reducing impurities and is much better on the environment than buying bottled water, which has it’s own set of issues.
In the most advanced water filter jugs, you can expect a significant reduction in calcium, magnesium, chlorine, lead and copper which all contribute to poor taste and limescale build up on appliances.
Although in the UK, water quality is quite good, there are still impurities found in the water due to the way it’s stored and distributed, so a water filter jug can be very useful in places known for poor water quality such as hardness and bitter taste.
All of the best water filter jugs featured on this page have the Maxtra+ water filter which is developed by BRITA, so out of all the water filter jugs you can choose to buy, ones that feature this specific filter are most popular.
As more than 60% of UK households have hard water, these filters are specifically designed to reduce chlorine, limescale and other impurities that can be found in standard tap water.
The micro carbon pearls and ion exchange pearls inside the Maxtra+ water filter gives you better tasting water/food, help to prolong the life of your appliances that are destroyed by limescale build up and permanently absorbs metals such as lead and copper.
Carbon based filters such as the micro carbon pearls found in the BRITA Maxtra+ water filters do help to reduce the presence of limescale in drinking water and also help to reduce limescale build up on appliances too, so your kettle will last much longer.
In fact, all of the best water filter jugs we have featured on this page are designed to reduce limescale to some degree (some products will do a better job at removing limescale than others), although none of these filters will completely remove limescale 100%.
